Book 1 of the Camilla Lee series is about a formidable avenger and assassin wanting payback. In Unleashing the Tiger, author Jerry Furnell shows an effortless and ingenious command of the action-thriller genre, much like a gifted painter whose brushstrokes glide smoothly onto the canvas. Camilla Lee is not your typical girl-next-door type. As the survivor of a brutal homicide that took away the lives of her family, she becomes an outcast and falls victim to bullying and depression. But as the deaths of her parents remain a mystery, especially that of her father, who was presumed to have ruffled the feathers of the wrong people, she has to pull herself together to avenge the wrongs that have been done to her, even if it means taking on the most feared triad in Hong Kong.
Unleashing the Tiger is pure high-octane storytelling. Jerry Furnell exudes a Quentin Tarantino vibe in his narrative. Unleashing the Tiger is a high-level revenge tale that makes sense of the violence in the plot. Does Camilla have the right motivation? Her going after those responsible for making her an orphan may be construed as mere plot and conflict markers, but the story suggests an alternative world where justice taken into one’s own hands is possible, and therefore gives you a good feeling despite the blood on the hands of the action hero. Moreover, to read about Camilla going after a dreaded organized crime group is further affirmation that women are already occupying their fair share in action novels and movies. Furnell paces this story with a balance between moments of action, dialogue, and character history. It’s an action tale whose appeal will also please mature readers.
