Undying Queen is the first entry in The Undying Queen of Ur series by Abraham Kawa and Arahom Radjah, an epic fantasy series with a fascinating setting in ancient Mesopotamia and a world that literally absorbs the reader. The reader is transported to a setting where power rules and where the weak are oppressed. The Sumerians rule the land with a strong grip. It is in this climate riddled by war and conflict that the Undying Queen of Ur, Arkhalla, extends her power. The undying subject their captives to untold suffering in the city. Shamath, a young boy, is saved by the Undying Queen and used as her body slave. But she is unaware that the act of saving the boy will take them on an unforgettable adventure, one with the potential to change civilization.
A story that features an intriguing, well-drawn cast of characters and a setting filled with historical hints, Undying Queen reads beautifully as a stand-alone story. Abraham Kawa and Arahom Radjah do a great job of capturing the warring culture of the time and the tenets of a civilization buried in history books. The authors’ world-building and attention to detail captivated me, raising the bar for tales of political intrigue and romance set in ancient times. The authors lavish a lot of care on their fictional characters, yet keep the historical period of the narrative real. The conflict is well-developed at different levels, and I enjoyed how it moves the story forward. This is a balanced, deftly written, and engaging story that transports readers to ancient lands. I can't wait for the next two entries into the trilogy.
