Underground Scouts: Book 1 of the WWII Rising Hope Series is a young adult novel by Marie Sontag. The WWII Rising Hope Series is about the courage of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides in Poland who fought against the Nazis. Set in Warsaw from the 1939 German occupation to the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, Book 1 follows the lives of teen siblings Tadzio and Magdalena, a Boy Scout and Girl Guide respectively, who pledge to support the resistance efforts of the Polish Underground Army in Warsaw along with their scoutmaster and fellow scouts. Why did their father leave them? Will they ever see their parents again? Will they and their fellow scouts survive four years of brutal occupation?
In Underground Scouts, Marie Sontag gives us an inspirational story of courage and sacrifice as young adults join the fight for the freedom of Poland. Weaving fictional characters into a framework of historical characters and events, Sontag delivers a narrative that is fast-paced, highly descriptive, and utterly engaging. Faced with the mysterious departure of their father and the imprisonment of their mother, Tadzio and Magdalena join other Scouts and Girl Guides to face the harsh and often deadly reality of war. Maps of Warsaw, battle locations, and the region, along with lists of both historical and fictional characters and a bibliography are included. Jewish and German characters are interwoven into the story as well. For fans of WWII fiction, Underground Scouts is a dramatic story to be enjoyed by young adult and adult readers alike.
