If you are a fan of Mario Puzo’s masterpiece The Godfather, you will definitely enjoy Russell Williams’s Under Fire. A great and compelling short story about the Mendez crime family and their drug and arms trafficking underground business and their law enforcement enemies, Special Agent Tom Woods from the FBI and Detective Sergeant Rick Malone. Both characters are incorrigible and noble at heart; they keep their values close to them to clean the cities of the bad influences that the Mendez crime family has created. Under Fire follows the story of both Woods and Malone as they infiltrate Mendez’s inner circle to bring justice to the table.
Under Fire is a highly entertaining and fast read which transports you for a couple of hours and you forget everything. I really appreciated the fact that it is a short story, given that this is an area somewhat exploited by the movie industry. I found it curious to see it as a short story. Russell Williams shows the reader how cunning Mafia families can be, and what it takes to be an honest and moral human being and fight against them without fear. Our world is littered with people like the Mendez family and their followers so it is refreshing seeing two men dedicated to bringing justice and peace to their city. It takes guts to fight for what you believe in when you know there is someone who will try their best to stop you.
