Ummie Tink is a story that was originally a chapter in a 1913 children’s book titled The Cheer Chirpers by Joshua Freeman Crowell. Katharine Valentino has written a new version of this story to make it more understandable to children five generations removed from those who first delighted in its rhyme and rhythm. She remembers taking this book to show and tell to share with her friends. Ummie Tink leaves his nest, seeking adventure. He finds a little more than he’s prepared for. From his adventures, he acquires courage. He learns how to cope without stinging the gentle creatures he encounters. He finally finds his way home again to be with his family.
The illustrations are very adorable and simple. They helped my son and me visualize what was being described. Ummie Tink ends up in quite a dilemma when he leaves the house. Katharine Valentino highlights themes of courage to use your voice to speak up. I also learned a bit about parenting from his mother's reaction once everything was settled and Ummie Tink found his way home. If I’m busy I will let my child help me to keep them safe and out of trouble. The story moves at a medium pace, giving young readers just enough time to enjoy each rhyme. I love there are black and white pages I can copy and print so my son can practice tracing, drawing, and exploring coloring. I would recommend fans of picture books, preschool, animals, and Maya the Bee to read this delightful book.
