Two Hearts Unspoken Targets by Tamara Ferguson continues the tradition of books about returning servicemen who are wounded physically, and often emotionally, after serving their country overseas. This is Book 11 in an enthralling series that cross-links characters between the books. Air Force Captain Zach Logan has returned from Afghanistan where he was horrifically burned in an attack on his airbase. Also with a permanent limp from the attack, Zach is initially lost and lonely as he returns to the old family home in New Orleans, now lived in by his cousin; a house that holds some terrible memories buried in Zach’s subconscious and only come out in his nightmares. At thirty-five Zach is beginning to believe he will never find anyone to share his life with and now, with the permanent scarring, he begins to sink into a depression. The man who saved Zach’s life in Afghanistan convinces him to come to Crystal Rock, Wisconsin, where a new Wounded Warrior facility is being constructed. Zach can be a great help to other wounded warriors returning injured from the war as well as working at the special-needs facility for children. When Zach meets an older woman, Beth, and her twenty-year-old autistic son, the sparks between the pair are instantaneous but Zach must first come to terms with his own disfigured body, how he views himself and a past that haunts his dreams. I’ve read a few Tamara Ferguson books and I love the gentle, sweet, and passionate nature of the romances they entail. Two Hearts Unspoken Targets is no exception to the previous episodes of this series. Both of the lead characters are damaged in some way and yet both are desperately seeking that right person for them. One of Ferguson’s great skills is her ability to invest a reader emotionally in the characters and she does this to perfection. I particularly enjoyed the loving and protective relationship between Beth and her son but also the caring and accepting nature of the boy’s autism by Zach and his family. The realization of Kyle’s potential abilities was a positive feature of the story. The plot regarding the people smuggling and exploitation was complicated enough to keep any reader interested and guessing. Ferguson writes gentle, flowing romances that give us a message and I am definitely a big fan of this series and others she has penned. The writing flows effortlessly and this book can easily be read in a single session. This author continues to produce top quality work in a crowded market genre. That her work consistently rises to the top of the pile is a testament to her qualities as a storyteller and I can highly recommend this particular story to anyone who likes excitement, romance, and ultimately true family values. An excellent read.
