Pastor David Owens has struggled in his attempts to increase interest in the New Hope Christian Church. Between the challenges of a new ministry, the early days of his marriage, and the impending birth of his third child, David often succumbs to the pressures of his godly calling. And just like anyone in his position, doubt crowds into his mind from time to time. So, when he gets a desperate call from a young, unwed mother, Abby, he looks deep within himself for the words and the faith to keep her alive. The daughter of over the top fundamentalists, Abby spills her story over the phone to Pastor David and an increasing church audience while he patiently listens from his office. Abby’s teenage mistake reveals a life of abuse at the hands of her unyielding parents. All she wants to do is the “right” thing for her and her child. So far, her only option is to end her suffering and protect baby Grace from a life of cruelty. With the hope in David’s life changing dialogue, will Abby find the courage to stand up for herself and a new life of salvation?
Twisted Faith by Victoria Schwimley, with Jessica Morrison, publicizes the potential horrors encountered by many of our youth today. Minus a heavy-handed sermon, Schwimley presents an uplifting lesson on the consequences of that one life-altering mistake that changes the complexion of a young life. Twisted Faith is a must-read for adolescents and adults alike. I sincerely enjoyed the perspective in which the story unfolds. A thoroughly engaging YA story.
