Turner by Karl Drinkwater is a horror story like no other. Stawl Island. Isolated, lonely, the ideal place if you want to get away from it all. First, Tom Stanley went looking for the island after hearing a somewhat creepy tale from a friend. There is something odd about the village, but he can’t quite put his finger on it. Opting to stay the night, he might change his mind when he sees what the village has planned for him. Three more visitors come to the island – Chris, who has something of a past and wants peace; Megan, who is trying to get over her ex; and David, a young police officer who wants a peaceful posting. Things really aren’t what they seem though, and events are about to take a turn for the worse. They must band together if they are to stay ahead of the masses, but things can and do get worse. A massive storm is about to break and there is no way off the island. No one will survive the night if they can’t work together and outwit the villagers.
Turner by Karl Drinkwater is an intriguing read, a book that I found hard to put down. The story is an attention-grabber right from the word go, and the more I read it, the harder it became to put it down. The first time I read about the village it struck me that it was like something out of a psychological horror story and, straightaway, I found myself waiting with bated breath to see what was going to happen. While it might seem to some readers to be a somewhat chaotic story, there is a reason for this and it does all pull together and make sense later on. The characters were really well developed, but were developed through the book rather than at the beginning. I like this way of writing because it adds far more to the story, giving certain events more meaning. Excellent book, and I'm looking forward to more from Mr Drinkwater.
