Trumpets of Jericho by Logan Christie is a mesmerizing tale of growth, seeking one’s purpose, and finding a foothold in a world with many possibilities and challenges. It follows Simon, a college dropout and retail clerk as he tries to make sense of his life, feeling as though he were in a glass box, chasing dreams that elude him, and being stalked by a homeless individual. The question is: faced with his desires and the deepest longing for fulfillment, can he take control of his destiny? How can he get ahead in a world whose weight pulls everything down?
This is a classic book, written in a style that is original and lyrical. For the most part, it is metaphorical and the language is so gorgeous, with words that are pregnant with meaning. You are immediately pulled into not only the world of the protagonist but into his psyche and the observant style of writing has a powerful effect. At times it is introspective. Logan Christie captures the ache that young readers feel in a powerful way, and in a fast-paced cultural environment, it is easy to feel lost and to harbor emotions like Simon. The prose is exquisite, conjuring images that sear strongly into the minds of readers. The characters are wonderfully written. The lyrical nature of the writing gripped me from the opening pages and I couldn’t stop reading. The language and dialogues reflect the time, age, and culture, and the intensity and exuberance of the youth it speaks about. The reader feels the youthfulness, the depth in the existence the character tries to grasp. Trumpets of Jericho can only be described with hyperboles; it is an engrossing story told in a compelling narrative voice and reflecting the soul of the protagonist.
