Triumph Without Glory is the second book in The Vines of Bordessi series by Robbi Perna. The story follows John Christopher Cavaleri as he finally returns home from the Middle East. After multiple tours there, John has more than just physical scars to show for his time in hell. John barely managed to make it out of there alive, but his mind will not forgive him for not protecting Shirin Tabari. Something terrible happened on his last deployment and it is haunting his nightmares. The nightmares become even more terrifying when the beautiful Shirin Tabari comes to visit him and everything comes crashing down on him once again. However, his real test begins when he has to work with Shirin once again to bring peace. This time, the enemy hits them close to home, and only working together can bring resolution. Can John and Shirin work together as a team once again? Or will they let the past rule their present?
Triumph Without Glory has everything that you want from an entertaining story. It has a strong yet human protagonist, a storyline that gets better as the story develops, and a pace that just never drops. Robbi Perna has done an incredible job of creating an atmosphere that is not only enjoyable but perfect for the story to develop. John’s progress, his personal dilemma, and the ghosts of his past are all necessary to the unfolding of the plot and John’s development arc. His relationship with Shirin plays a vital role in his growth and provides support to John. This is more than just a romance novel and I loved it for its intricate plot and characters.
