Treasure Seekers by Roberta Seret is set in 2017 and tells the intriguing story of Romanian Marina Johannes, New York’s leading cosmetologist. Marina and her long-time friend Cristina Patrisse, a prominent fashion designer, travel to Istanbul to acquire more information about an intricate web of criminal activity which includes senior political leaders. During their trip, Marina goes hiking and on a treasure hunt, set up by an art dealer from Santa Fe named Forrest Fenn, on a mountain range, the Sangre de Cristos. While walking, Marina meets Native American Tahquitz with whom she forms an instant friendship as they share a common interest in natural health and beauty. Tahquitz joins Marina and Cristina in their quest to discover the truth. One crime leads to another and the two women are kidnapped. They hope that Tahquitz can use technology to find and rescue them.
Treasure Seekers is a thrilling, suspenseful story loaded with information relating to corruption during the Gas for Gold Scheme and the investigations that followed. Roberta Seret does a fantastic job of describing the characters, scenes, locations, and events from the city of New York to the countryside in Turkey. I especially enjoyed reading about the relationship between Marina and Cristina. Learning about the beauty of the architecture, scenery, and markets in Istanbul is educational and interesting. The story is smooth flowing from beginning to end but does contain a number of twists, turns, and surprises such as the government conspiracies. A thoroughly enjoyable novel that combines fascinating facts with fiction, highly recommended for all adults.
