Tread Loudly by Kristine Cherek is the true life story of a woman who worked in upper-middle-class professions. Cherek was a lawyer, a corporate executive, and a professor. She used her experiences to write this book, which is designed to help other women navigate what may be male-dominated cultures. Cherek also advises her readers—both female and male—about more wide-ranging aspects of life. Chapter titles include Putting in the Work, If You Could Do Anything, What Would It Be?, and Confronting Locker Room Talk. Throughout the book, Cherek shares many of her own experiences in the workplace as well as the experiences of friends and colleagues. Her goal is to change the culture of workplaces so everyone can compete on a level playing field. The book concludes with an extensive list of source notes.
It's always good to learn from successful people, and there’s no doubt at all that Kristine Cherek has experienced a successful work life. In Tread Loudly, she shares many of the lessons she learned during her long and prosperous career. Those who are just starting a career will learn much from this book, as will those who are in the midst of their chosen profession. Cherek is brutally honest in describing some of the experiences she underwent, and adding the experiences of friends and colleagues was a stroke of genius. Furthermore, many readers—both female and male—will identify with the incidents that Cherek and others endured. Readers will learn constructive ways to deal with discrimination and harassment. They will also learn to put their careers in perspective for their whole lives.
