Traveling Daisy: A Generational Cancer Story of Disease and Dysfunction by Lisa Marie Wilson shows how a person suffering from cancer, or a person who has someone in their life confronting this disease, can power through this tough time. Instead of feeling sorry for the author who is battling cancer herself, you actually feel pride when you read her words and realize that she is not just a survivor, but a warrior who is sharing her survival skills and helping people understand how they can fight this disease emotionally, physically and mentally.
The author decided to write this book when she lost her mother to cancer. This is a self-help book/story of a woman who saw her grandmother survive cancer and her own mother perish from this disease. Now that she is facing this disease head on, she has compiled her stories, her anecdotes and tips to help anyone who is fighting this disease smile a little while learning something new. It tries to answer the age-old question of “Did I do this to myself?” and helps in figuring out how you can fight this disease like a champion and kick ass.
I think this book is medicine not only for cancer patients, but also for anyone who is going through a tough time in their lives. Short, funny, open and raw, this book tells readers that even though life looks bleak, it does not have to be. I was laughing and crying at the same time; it was an emotional roller coaster that I did not want to get off. Lisa Marie Wilson tells her story and offers her tips in a simple yet effective manner so that her point gets across and the reader actually learns something.
