Tessa McFionn’s To Discover a Divine is the first book in the Rise of the Stria series. Kahlym Cal Jhuen is breaking out two of his captured crewmembers when he sees two Rimmarian guards standing over a woman. He shoots both guards and offers to help the woman, but she doesn’t understand him. A harrowing escape shows a lethal wound across the woman’s back. Yhan’tu works on her in his medical suite and is stunned when a flash of light heals the woman’s back. When Kahlym checks on the woman, she starts to cry, and he holds her. Meanwhile, Panza's anger rises as he realizes they lost the Divine during transport. After watching a video, he sends Khaxxan on a mission to retrieve Evainne from Kahlym. The Rimmarians needed the woman for reproduction to prevent the Divine Race from going extinct.
Tess McFionn creates multiple character perspectives that demonstrate why Evainne is essential for them. I liked how Kahlym’s crew treated each other as family. It was funny how Evainne shut down Qaen’s attempt at seducing her. The witty remarks and typical idioms used resulted in a language barrier that was funny. The vivid details given about each character allowed me to envision what they looked like, as well as gain insight into their thoughts. I felt sympathy for Kahlym’s lack of self-esteem caused by his family’s rejection. I could relate to Evainne’s lack of family involvement and only having two friends she could trust. Deadly assassins, betrayal, and death showed how Evainne could process each threat. To Discover a Divine has an unpredictable plot and seamless character transitions that science fiction readers will enjoy.
