Can you see all the magical creatures around you? The elves, witches, fairies, goblins, and gnomes (both good and evil)? There is magic all around us; all we have to do is believe. Tilly believes, as do her twin cousins, Jess and Zach. They’ve fought battles in the magical Cheyanne Forest, intent on restoring all that is good. They had to fight the Hidden Elves and the Evil Elves, all with the ultimate goal of capturing Timitus, King of the Evil Elves. It’s all about power and the desire to rule the world. Will good overcome evil? And will Tilly and her battle companions ever outgrow their fantasy life and their ability to see magic all around them?
Catharina Steel’s middle-grade novel, Tilly and the Battle of the Elves, is the third and final book in her Cheyanne Forest Trilogy series. Having fought many battles in the previous books, Tilly and her cousins are seasoned warriors, all with one goal: to save the world from the magical powers of evil. Like Lewis Carroll, Enid Blyton, and other imaginative children’s fantasy writers, this author has woven a fantastic web of magic, mystery, fantasy and adventure into a profound and engaging story that will have young readers spellbound (no pun intended) to the very end.
The plot begins with a cleverly crafted backstory so the first-time reader of this series won’t be lost. With the backstory complete, the plot progresses with the reconnecting of the young people as they set their sights on righting the good-evil balance of Cheyanne Forest. Like myself, I believe readers of all ages will appreciate the Epilogue which provides just enough insight into the characters after the final battle. The building tension and excitement of the previous pages is set to rights with this calming look at the future and, perhaps, another story to tell for the next generation of magical young people.
