Through the Years is a collection of ten short stories by Jamila Mikhail, written over eight years between 2015-2022. A man recalls his past mistakes and embraces his fate as a passenger on a crashing plane. A schizophrenic patient eats a bowl of cereal and realizes a shocking truth about their uncle. Recently released from prison after ten long years of incarceration, a man is determined to start his life anew without reverting to old habits. A man who idolizes his father wants to pass on his values to his children to preserve his legacy in the world. A person struggles to move on from a broken relationship and indulges in memories of the times spent with their lover. A woman tries to understand the meaning of her dreams and the messages of a deceased loved one.
Jamila Mikhail brings readers an absorbing collection of short stories that explore different facets of human behavior and experience. The tales in Through the Years traverse different genres -- from magical realism to slice-of-life drama, with each story adding something unique to the narrative. The author sheds light on various aspects of humanity through these captivating tales that take you by surprise at regular intervals. You don't know what to expect from the next one. Mikhail's characters feel like real people with flaws and vulnerabilities that make them relatable to the reader. Each story has the protagonist undergo a journey of self-discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed the collection and recommend it to readers who love to read short stories or literary fiction.
