While stranded in the country, a social worker uncovers shocking secrets hidden beneath the pastoral charm of the countryside in the captivating sleuth mystery, Three Secrets and Somebody's Ghost (A Miss Shirley Mystery) by Rita Kano. While she is checking out a possible fraud case, social worker Shirley Foster's car breaks down in a secluded rural area. Stranded without her cell phone in the middle of nowhere, Shirley asks for assistance from the lone farmer driving by on his tractor. When he tells her that there are no phones available and that the only vehicle in the area that can get her back into town is unavailable, she reluctantly accepts his offer to stay with him and his family. Taken to his home and greeted by the older man's three daughters, Shirley is overwhelmed by their openness and generosity. However, as the next couple of days pass, she begins to pick up clues that indicate things may not be all that they seem. Has Shirley inadvertently fallen into the hands of the very ones she came to find? Is she in danger?
Set in rural North Carolina, Three Secrets and Somebody's Ghost (A Miss Shirley Mystery) by Rita Kano is a delightful mystery novel. Suspenseful, intriguing, and containing suspicious circumstances, a possible murder, fraud, and a little misdirection, the captivating story has all the elements of a classic cozy mystery. It is a fascinating story with charming characters, intense and eerie scenes, and enough twists and turns to make it suspenseful and intriguing from the first page until the last. Accompanied by a nice cup of tea and cookies, it is the perfect book to curl up with to unwind. Complete with a touch of suspense, a hint of danger, and a lot of old-fashioned nosiness, it is an enjoyable novel that will entertain everyone who enjoys cozy mysteries with intrepid amateur sleuths.
