Lemesos, Cyprus born and raised and USA university educated. His love of history is home grown. The first book that he was read to, by an older cousin, was “The Peloponnesian Wars” by Thucydides, the Father of History. Certainly, as it was written in classical Greek, the author did not understand very much at all. Perhaps, though, what sunk into his mind was that certain periods and important events must be written and preserved for future generations to know. Not only that, but the history must be investigated, analyzed and written with due care on the causes, progression and done objectively.
The author, while a sixteen year old, first came to the United States. He had won an American Field Service scholarship. He made presentations about Cyprus to numerous organizations. This book is in a way an elaborate continuation, albeit at the opposite part of his life. He believes in lifelong learning, and peaceful settlement of differences among peoples.
At Ripon College, Wisconsin, he earned the A.B. degree. At Northeastern University, Boston, he continued with graduate studies earning an M.Sc. but also pursued Ph.D. studies. Finally, he had Harvard University graduate training in Management through case studies. This gave him additional insight into policy, leadership and leaders such as those covered in this book. A rigorous Harvard writing course helped prepare the author in this new book endeavor.
The final push in the author’s decision to go through with this book was his father’s example. His father, Tonis Melas, was a prolific writer and an indelible example that gave the author the “guts to go for it”. In his shortened life, he published nineteen books but had another thirty one ready for publication.

Three Hellene Cypriots by Andreas Antoniou Melas tells the history and achievements of Cyprus through the examples of a political leader, a religious leader and a sportsman, and how the turn of events in their lifetimes reflect the high points in Cypriot history. Discussions, more philosophical than merely factual, about the desires and aspirations of Cypriots, both Greek and Turkish, power struggles with the Ottoman Empire, influences of the British Empire, and other lesser known facets of Middle Eastern history are contained in these pages. It was interesting to read about the athlete who was spared from death by the Nazis for his Berlin Olympics credentials. From a mention of the part played by Cyprus in the Trojan War to the important role it enacted in solving the Jewish problem, no event of significance is left untouched by the author.
Three Hellene Cypriots by Andreas Antoniou Melas brings many lesser known areas of Cypriot history to the foreground through biographical sketches. It was surprising for me to learn that Cyprus was the originally selected area for establishing a Jewish state, with a plan to accommodate Cypriots elsewhere. The fine line existing between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the different proposals regarding ceding Cyprus to other states, which originated after each World War, how a win in a marathon by Stylianos Kyriakides, a Cypriot, resulted in US aid to the country, and many other interesting fragments are in this book to hold one's interest. Easy to read and mostly dealing with topics of human interest, this is a welcome addition to any collection of good books.
