Three Commands: Jesus' Fulfillment of the Law Through Love by Bruce Pagano II is a non-fiction Christian guide that is founded on the basis of love even though love didn't feel like the direction in which Pagano was initially headed. At the collapse of one relationship, Pagano was willing to throw in the towel on another, relegating God to the back-burner even though, in hindsight, He'd never had a spot in the front from pretty much the beginning. Pagano breaks down his personal experiences in raw and often heartbreaking detail. Over the course of three parts and nine chapters, Pagano is able to show how to reconnect the pieces through the interweaving of authentic scripture and an honest and open narrative of how they apply in our everyday lives.
It took me some time to process Three Commands because there were some areas that resonated with me on an incredibly intimate level, and I believe that there will be many readers who find themselves a little overwhelmed even if their connection is a bit different. Bruce Pagano II uses such simple, relatable stories and examples in the layering of our love for God, God's love for us, and our love for our neighbors and community. He writes of a time when his young daughter thought her dad was angry with her, and the parallels between his love and her doubt at that moment, and God's love and our doubt in many, many other moments felt so natural. For me, it is the organic transmission of the why and the how that makes Three Commands not just engaging, but also engrossing. This is a book that will be referenced by me when needed for many years to come.
