Thought Shredder: Bringing Out the Bucker in You by Chris Elliott is a tough but introspective read. The author recounts in a very raw and honest manner the details of his tumultuous relationship with his father; from the time he was a young boy all the way till adulthood when his father passed away. Elliott explains to readers his own personal fears that his father’s undesirable personality and behaviors would be passed to him through genetics. There was a very real fear in his life that he indeed would become his father, whether he wanted to or not. It was a long and difficult journey, but the author finally arrives at the place in his life where he realizes that although some small part of him may be like his father (hereditary), the choice on how to live and what to do rests solely within him. We are only free to be who we want when we truly understand where we came from and where we want to go.
I found Thought Shredder to be a tough and uncomfortable read, but at the same time the author presents such an honest and engaging tale of self-discovery. Regardless of childhood and upbringing, each person in this world is able to achieve great things and live happy lives if they don’t let what happened in past years define them. I do understand how a rough start can severely impact a person’s adult life but I hope that readers will find encouragement and the desire to move forward in a positive manner after reading Thought Shredder by Chris Elliott.
