This Time by Azaaa Davis is the first book in the Nadira Holden Demon Hunter series. Nadira woke up trapped and once she freed herself, she encountered a vampire in the cemetery and made her way back to the Children of Orion. She quickly learns that she’s been dead since the 1990s and discovers that a lot has changed in that time: her father has gone missing, demons and humans live in peace, and her first love married her high school nemesis. As she dives into the search for her father and struggles to come to terms with her new surroundings, mysterious blackouts unlock a dark family secret that changes everything and could hold the key to stopping an attack the demons have planned.
The poignant opening gives a vivid look at the person Nadira is and how she’s rationalizing everything that’s happening as a prank. Nadira is thrown into a whole new society which not only has vast changes in technology but, due to her actions that led to her death, a peace treaty was developed between humans and demons. As a young demon hunter, she’d dedicated her life to the Children of Orion to the point where she even gave her life in the fight against demons. Now, everyone has moved on without her and those closest to her are adults with families whose lives have changed along with society. Demons and humans have created peace between them which provides some conflict for Nadira as she now must figure out where a demon hunter belongs in this new reality. While the world has grown around her, she’s still just a teenager so the emotional struggle she undergoes is told through a genuine voice that Azaaa Davis captures with an honest tone. The world is gritty and dark with Nadira drawn into the world of a demon prince and a succubus, which packs the story with action and mystery.
Davis weaves several layers together with the mystery of Nadira’s father's disappearance and the secret from her childhood that changes how she views herself and the Children of Orion. The story has two strong-willed characters whose perspectives are seen, weaving between Nadira’s struggle in the present day and a demon named Roquelle that ends up under the control of a vicious demon prince. The two are incredibly different women but they’re both strong, brazen, and independent. This Time is a gritty urban fantasy adventure about a girl that was once dead and is drawn back into the fight between demons and humans in a story with mystery, action, and suspense.
