Thirteen Ways To Talk About Thirteen Reasons Why: A Parent’s Guide — How to Have Effective Conversations with Teens about the Netflix Series by Stephanie Kreml, MD is an insightful and thought provoking read that revolves around the show 13 Reasons Why, the series on Netflix that tackles issues in high school and teenage life. Through this book, the author speaks about how she found the confidence to discuss the difficult issues teenagers have to deal with, like peer pressure, drugs and alcohol use, sex, bullying, mental health issues, and many other topics related to teens and their problems. This book is an excellent tool for all parents as it will enable them to have open and honest conversations with their children when it comes to their ups and downs.
I found the book empowering and it points to resources where more help can be found if required. The series can be watched by parents and their teens together as the show depicts mental health problems, drugs and alcohol, flawed adults, and conflict. The author has organized the book into four parts: part one provides a foundation for effective conversations; part two addresses the various factors that influence and affect teen life; part three discusses mental health issues and suicide; and part four discusses the recovery process. This book is definitely a must-read for all parents, as it will enable them to have a conversation with their teens and bridge the emotional gap between them.
