An interesting and engaging young adult urban fantasy, There Be Demons by M.K. Theodoratus is well-crafted with compelling characters. Gillen, who leads the four Gargoyle Guardians of the city, is forced to ask for reinforcements when imps and demons seize the streets of Trebridge. They are a nasty lot that are hoping to become even stronger. For reinforcement, he is sent four teenagers from the projects, led by Britt Kelly, a teen with a load of problems of her own. The reader follows Britt’s adventures as she is surprised by an effigy that unexpectedly turns into a gargoyle and expects her to fight demons, the possession of her step-mother by a demon, and her heart problems. Does she have what it takes to survive in this kind of world after suffering from the divorce of her parents?
M.K. Theodoratus has created a world where readers experience a powerful intersection between the natural and the supernatural, a world of conflict where characters evolve under strange rules. The writing is great and I enjoyed the author’s unique sense of phraseology, the exquisite diction, and the powerful images that are left in the reader’s mind with each scene. The scenes are well-crafted, each designed to get the reader emotionally and psychologically involved in the story. The plot may seem simple, but it is woven with great intricacies and surprises. But what had me engaged throughout the entire story is Theodoratus’ gift for character and conflict. I loved the way Britt is developed. She experiences the conflict at multiple levels — emotional, psychological, and physical — and readers will be delighted by how she grows within the dynamics of the conflict. There Be Demons is a humorous, suspenseful story with great entertainment potential.
