“Theft is Legal: Gain Perspective from 13 Economic Stories and Concepts,” written by Svetoslav S. Elenkov, is a collection of stories, memories and concepts that relate to finance and the economy that are thought-provoking and will leave you pondering the message of each one. The author states at the beginning of the book that before he immigrated to the United States he grew up under three different types of government; this experience has allowed him to live with different ideas and practices concerning the economy and thus impacts how he views today’s economy. Each chapter focuses on a different concept or idea related to the economy. For example, there is a chapter discussing insurance – whether one should invest in an insurance company or to invest that money and have it available on an as-needed basis. Another chapter discusses non-profit versus for-profit options.

I found this book to be very interesting and thought-provoking. I find the economy interesting, but do not understand all the ins and outs of it by any means; therefore I was not sure how I was going to feel about this book. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed reading it! The author’s recollections were great to read as life was so different for him than what I have personally experienced. The stories and concepts shared gave me a lot to think about with regard to how the economy is right now and definitely gave me a new general perspective.
