In The Wrong David by Christa Wojo, we meet David as he embarks on a business trip to the vineyards of Provence with his life-long best friend, Brian, and Brian's wife, Vanessa. Secretly in love with her for years, David joins Brian and Vanessa to explore French dining and nightlife, in spite of his ever growing frustration and longing for her. Despite Brian having rescued David from his "nerdy" childhood and being a dear friend, Brian's overconfident personality grates on David as the three bask at the beach, engage in a business meeting, and join together to celebrate Vanessa's last night in France. Following an evening of dancing and Cristal champagne, David and Vanessa put an inebriated Brian to bed then return to David's room to fetch some water. How will the two face the truth they have hidden for years as they wonder how life might be in a parallel universe? Will David give in to his longing for the woman of his dreams?
Christa Wojo's writing in The Wrong David is captivating and beautiful. With a wonderful knack for artful and vivid turns of phrase, Wojo brings the reader immediately into the setting and feelings of the characters. Although this is a short story, the reader is easily engaged and understands David's feelings as he watches his best friend and the love of his life together before him. Wojo uses all of the five senses to depict emotions and surroundings, making the story believable and appealing with precise and unique descriptions. David's character is like a comfortable old friend you are compelled to cheer for. Readers can easily relate to his childhood "nerdiness" with Wojo's use of humour, making him a likeable character, and contrasting him against Brian's pomposity and Vanessa's mystery. The Wrong David is a wonderful, well written short story with a refreshing and unexpected ending.
