The Wish Carvers, written by Kathleen Gauer and illustrated by Sari Richter, tells the story of elf siblings Fay and her brother Eddie, who spend their days creating beautiful carvings to sell at the village market every Saturday, so they can buy food, clothes, and paint for their carvings. They live a simple and peaceful life, but carving every day can get exhausting. Soon, they are complaining and unhappy. Then, one day, when they discover an old magical carving knife, their lives change. Now, they can carve whatever they want and have the life they always dreamed of because if they use the magical knife, then it becomes reality. But will this solve all their problems or worsen them?

The Wish Carvers by Kathleen Gauer is a compelling story with relatable characters. Often, we complain about what we have without knowing it is just right for us until it is gone, and the things we wish for could end up doing more harm than good. This book beautifully teaches gratitude and contentment through Fay and Eddie. It also teaches us to be careful what we wish for. It was amusing to observe them rationalize their wants and keep trying, thinking if they could tweak their wishes just a bit more, everything would be perfect. I love how well the illustrations complemented the narration and enhanced my reading experience. The arrangement of the book makes it very appealing and absorbing to look at. I believe every child will enjoy reading this book and definitely learn a thing or two.
