The Water Tower Club by BK Mayo is a story filled with drama, suspense, and mystery. It has been a decade since Darryl Coombs left his hometown of Grotin, Kansas, just after graduation from high school, escaping his painful past. When his sister, Libby, is arrested on a charge of stabbing Darryl’s childhood enemy, Bobby Hobson, Darryl comes home, hoping that it will be the opportunity to help his sister and, perhaps, reconcile with his past. Darryl is not only forced to face the reasons why he left Grotin but his desperate efforts to save his sister lead to mistakes with devastating consequences. He might have bitten off more than he can chew.
The novel is narrated in the first person, following Darryl's viewpoint in an absorbing voice that catches the attention of the reader from the very first page. The narrative starts with a powerful premise. No matter the thoughts of a difficult, needy mother, the pain of abandonment and the sadness that punctuated his history, Darryl is compelled to go home. The realism infused into the writing makes it really strong and irresistible. BK Mayo keeps it real and human, evoking powerful emotions in the characters, emotions that readers can relate to easily. The plot is deftly handled and character development is impeccable. There is pathos, humor, a lot of suspense and mystery, and it’s easy to follow the protagonist. The Water Tower Club is fast-paced and tantalizing, a beautifully crafted story with strong themes of family, solitude, justice, love, and one man’s quest to make sense of a past that has always haunted him.
