A contract killer is silencing New York City stockbrokers before the SEC can close in on a mob connection in The Vig (Rector Street Series Book One ), a thriller by John Nuckel. On September 11, 2001, Frank McGinley barely escapes with his life when the tower collapses. After that day, Frank's drinking takes an upward swing, and his job as a stockbroker is on the skids. Due to the slump in his trading, Frank is no longer considered productive, so now he is given the dubious opportunity to prove his skills with small options. While going over his daily printouts from the clearing firm, Frank's life takes an unexpected and unpleasant turn when he uncovers fraudulent activity. After confronting the managing director at the clearing company, Wellington Securities, Frank accepts a check to keep quiet. Unfortunately for him, Wellington Securities has been under surveillance by the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Frank is recorded receiving the bribe. Meanwhile, the mastermind behind the scam is removing all ties that lead back to him, and the contacts Frank dealt with at the clearing company are found dead. Frank is in hot water; not only does the SEC want to take him down, but he is now on a hired killer's hit list. Between the two opposing sides, can Frank come out of this alive?
A dark and devious scheme is hidden in plain sight in this riveting read, The Vig (Rector Street Series Book One) by John Nuckel. The exciting and entertaining plot traverses from the New York Stock Exchange to the mountains of Colorado and the islands of the Caribbean. Fascinating characters keep the intrigue and suspense alive as they each confront their nemesis. In a story combining much of the characters' history, which includes behind the scenes events, with the intoxicating adrenaline rush of the stock exchange, I found the level of intensity within the plot to be maintained throughout the book. Those who love a gripping thriller complete with murders and sexual encounters will enjoy delving into this outstanding novel.
