“These are the veiled sayings that the living Jesus spoke and Judas, the twin, Thomas wrote them down,” is the beginning of the Gospel of Thomas. This scripture, written about two thousand years ago, was discovered in a cave near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945. For anyone who has read biblical scriptures, this Gospel is unique in many ways. Author Elizabeth Elder has crafted a lovely book titled The Veiled Sayings: A Personal Response to the Gospel of Thomas. She explains this is not a scholarly analysis. Rather, it is her personal, intuitive interpretation of the 114 sayings of Jesus that comprise this Gospel. The definition of the spiritual realm is that it is always present within each person, and it is everywhere. One can experience the Oneness that is available to all.
How the author organized this book was certainly inspired. Each of the 114 sayings (she accurately names them “lessons”) are noted, with her personal understanding following each one. Divided into thirteen titled chapters, each chapter ends with an enlightening summary. Then, more surprises at the end of the book…this review will not be a spoiler! But the surprises are both engaging, thought-provoking, and current for the serious seeker. This book is one to be savored and read from a meditative place. A person could read a chapter a day and gain enriching spiritual growth. The Veiled Sayings, written by Elizabeth Elder, is a treasure during this time of awakening. This book is one you could read again and again – and gain new insights every time.
