The Truth Lies: A Florida Saga by Cindy Foley is a historical novel that captures life on the ranch and develops around a huge conflict between two powerful families. The conflict that would define the hostility between the two families for generations started when an Arabian stallion owned by the Fairburns attacked the son of a blacksmith. Could the Turners let things be and move on with their lives? Readers are introduced to a colossal conflict, an intense drama that sets the dynamics of this book. Set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Florida, this book clearly captures multi-generational hatred and showcases the same drama that has played out in many families across the world in a brilliant style. Read to find out what happens when you choose to live by the “tooth for a tooth” code of ethics, and when what you hand down to your progeny is the insatiable thirst for revenge.
Cindy Foley has written a story that will entertain readers. I loved the portraits she created of the two rival families: the Fairburns are wealthy, they breed horses, and make a fortune from cattle ranching while the Turners are reputable for their greed, their love for gambling, and their callousness. Foley has a special gift for exploring characters and readers will love to follow the dramas taking place in the two families. The conflict is well-developed and it enables the reader to get a better appreciation of characters and plot. This is one of those stories that powerfully portrays the effects of hatred.
The writing is excellent, featuring compelling and intelligent dialogues that enrich the different aspects of the story, such as character development and plot. The Truth Lies is an interesting story that will remind readers of the drama that plays out in many lives and warn them of the consequences of revenge. I couldn’t help thinking about some families in my neighborhood as I read this gripping tale; the story reads like one we have seen many times too often, and like one we’ll see again taking place in our world.
