The Trainee Undercover by Brenda Shaw is a young adult thriller. Paul Collier is high up in a pharmaceutical company and he knows something that others don’t want to get out. His family is under threat if he says anything so he decides that they should all go away. But things take a turn for the worse when a body turns up and Paul’s son, George, together with his friends, Harry, Angela and Alex, all find themselves embroiled in the mystery in a bid to help Paul. Four children with no detective skills pitted against a team of ruthless professional criminals – it’s bound to end in disaster. But on which side? Can the kids outwit the pros or will it all come crashing down on Paul?
The Trainee Undercover by Brenda Shaw is a fast-moving thriller, full of action. It was one of those edge-of-the-seat reads, a white-knuckle ride that starts off quite innocently, with four teens getting ready to spend the summer together, but soon evolves into a rollercoaster adventure. There are twists and turns along the way that keep you hanging on, waiting to see what will happen next. This is a very cleverly written plot with plenty of excitement and danger. The characters were developed to a stage where I felt as if I could identify with them, and the story was written in a way that drew me in so I felt as though I were living the story with the characters. Excellent book, well-suited to the target audience, but also one that plenty of adult readers could get into. Looking forward to more from Brenda Shaw.
