It’s picture day at school and Miles notices a green spot on one of his front teeth. What should he do? He can’t very well smile for the picture when he has a green-spotted tooth, now can he? In LaTonya Butler’s The Tale of Fuzzy Tooth Critters, Miles learns how to keep his teeth clean and healthy, free of those gross fuzzy critters that can invade the mouth and destroy the teeth, not to mention destroy a picture opportunity. It’s more than a matter of regular brushing. It’s important to eat healthy foods and regularly visit the dentist for a thorough cleaning and checkup. Miles is shocked to learn that he’s been negligent in his dental care, but he’s learning and so can you.
LaTonya Butler’s picture book The Tale of Fuzzy Tooth Critters: How Do Sugar Bugs Survive in the Mouth? is a clever way to teach young readers about dental hygiene. Told in rhyming verse, the story follows Miles as he discovers something shocking on one of his teeth and then learns not only how to get rid of the spot, but how to prevent it from happening again. The illustrations are colorful and help move the story along. The story points out the importance of your teeth and the proper ways to care for them. At the end of the book, there is a section on cavities and how they’re formed, as well as proper brushing and flossing techniques. The story is both humorous and educational and will appeal to the young reader.
