Caren Cantrell’s debut children’s novel The Sun Thief falls into the sci-fi, action, and adventure genres. Set in the year 2450, the story follows a group of Galactic Preservation Academy graduates, Manny, Cira, and Taran, as well as their nemesis Dasch. They embark on the next stage of their lives at different Control Stations to monitor the sun, moons, planetary atmospheres, and orbits in addition to noting potential dangers.

As a lover of all things sci-fi, I really enjoyed the story. The plot was well thought out and we were also provided with a little background information on the characters along with other beings in their solar system. I liked that this book promoted diversity and inclusivity on top of addressing the issue of family expectations and the loss of a loved one. Relatable family dynamics and social situations were presented, which also made you question what you would do if you ever found yourself in their shoes.

This book emphasized the use of critical thinking, good communication, and observation skills on top of forming long-lasting friendships. In The Sun Thief, Caren Cantrell puts these children in adult situations regarding the severity and risks of the jobs they have trained for and the assignments they are about to take on. While it is beautifully written, I think that there is still a lot to be explored as the ending leaves us with a few unanswered questions.
