The Strong Bear of Venice is a children’s storybook written by Katy Sloop Roberts with illustrations by Dan Dye. It tells the story of Luna and her black cat, Fortuna, who go to Venice when she is hired to teach a special needs child named Bernie Wellington. Luna goes beyond traditional academic methods to connect with Bernie on a personal level. She shares her knowledge and inspiring tales with enthusiasm and compassion, using a special fairy story to foster creativity and nurture emotional and imaginative growth in him. Meanwhile, Fortuna encounters bullies but also enjoys exploring Venice's fish markets and making new friends. Bernie learns a new kind of strength and begins to embrace his uniqueness. He forms a bond with Fortuna, and together they go on wild adventures with his friends. When Bernie discovers Fortuna’s magical gift, he gains courage and realizes that anything is possible.
The Strong Bear of Venice Is an engaging story that highlights themes of friendship, and self-belief and raises awareness about cerebral palsy. The vibrant setting of Venice and the colorful illustrations immerse readers in this enchanting tale. The book teaches young readers about resilience and inner strength and inspires them to embrace their unique abilities and face challenges with courage. The story incorporates Italian phrases and culture into the narration, providing an immersive experience for readers to learn about a different culture. Katy Sloop Roberts has a detailed way of describing characters, and her introduction of the Wellingtons gives the reader an exact feel of their relationship and connection with their son. I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it because it is heartwarming, entertaining, and inspiring.
