The Starlight Club 12: The Golden Spike Casino by Joe Corso is the story of mobsters, how they get even, how they fight and how they survive or die. Big Red Fortunato is the mob boss of Queens, New York; Meyer Lansky is another crime boss who is fleeing Cuba because Castro is about to burn down his hotel. Ira is Meyer’s long-time best friend and his right-hand man. As they prepare to flee, Ira is given a suitcase full of money. Instead of following orders, he takes the suitcase and quickly leaves the country. Red has influence and knows many people in the underworld; this works both in his favor and against him as other mobsters want to take over his Queens territory. Red has his hands full when he helps Meyer search for Ira - young hoods destroy his slot machines and the movie company he owns in Hollywood is also being attacked by other gangsters. Read along as his close associates Trenchie and Tarzan work hard to put everything back in order and show that he is still the “man in charge”.
It was almost impossible to put down The Golden Spike Casino because I just had to know what would happen next. While this is the 12th book in the series, it is the first one I have read and is a totally stand-alone book, though I am planning to go back and read one through eleven. There are so many battles being fought and problems that need handling that I could write pages and pages, but I think the best idea would be for you to read this book for yourself. The way Joe Corso has written The Golden Spike Casino makes characters come alive on the pages and the excitement never-ending. I would love to see this become a TV series; it would be a show I’d never miss.
