This book was intriguing from the very beginning; the odd family situation, the variety and aloofness of some of the characters plus the mysterious, complex story line. The main female character was initially a complete enigma but became increasingly interesting and solid as the book progressed. The intense story line culminated during the third part with more than a few surprises in store for the reader. The Stain of Past Connexions contains a great mix of characters including more than one archetypal villain. Eluned McRae vividly captures the lifestyle of wealthy professionals, their friends and staff. She wends and weaves a fascinating story, capturing the life of family intrigue culminating in an unexpected conclusion. The two families, pivotal to the plot, became connected in ways they could never have imagined. This book was captivating and the plot had great depth. I hope that Eluned McRae pursues her writing and we see more novels of this nature from her in the future.

The Stain of Past Connexions is a drama/murder mystery novel by Eluned McRae. Located on an estate in South England, the story of a man named Andrew begins with a woman named Nene. Two of Andrew’s friend - Paul and David - bring Nene to Andrew and ask him to keep her in his care. Andrew knows nothing about Nene, but Paul is aware of her past and the secrets that she keeps. Paul does not trust Andrew enough to tell him the truth about Nene. But quickly and unexpectedly, the story unfolds and defines criminal relationships to other people and other parts of England. Andrew, Paul and David face lies, deceit, and betrayal and must figure out how to break the connections they have associated themselves with.

The Stain of Past Connexions is an intricate novel that you will not be able to put down. You quickly learn that each character and their “connexion” are rich and fulfilling. I am honestly surprised at how thorough every character’s backstory is; while learning of each one I felt like I was putting together pieces of a puzzle. Eluned McRae’s writing is well done; her narrative flows nicely and everything seems to come together at the end. Although I did enjoy this story, I do believe that this novel could be separated into two parts. If you are into reading long and dramatic novels, however, this is the perfect book for you. I suggest The Stain of Past Connexions to anyone who is looking to solve a mystery. This book teaches you that it is okay to question the things that are happening around you.
