The Stage Driver’s Daughter by Krystal M. Anderson is a delightful tale about a subject that has been all-too-ignored in Western fiction. Western novels are replete with plots about cowboys and Indians and lawmen. This novel is about a Nevada stage driver—Winnifred “Win” Morgan—who is a woman disguised as a man because, in this era before non-discrimination equal rights in hiring, a woman driving a stage coach anywhere, much less through dangerous outlaw territory, was simply unthinkable. Driving a stage was thought of as a man’s job, plain and simple, and potentially life-threatening. Win Morgan sets out to prove the conventional thinking wrong, in honor of her deceased father whom she dearly loved and whom she accompanied on his many trips as a stagecoach driver. To what extent or not Win is successful in this effort is something the reader will have to decide.
The Stage Driver’s Daughter by Krystal M. Anderson is one of the best novels in any genre that I have ever read in over a half-century of reading novels. Well-written; this author knows her craft. Readers of Western fiction will delight in the unusual plot about stagecoaches and their drivers, as mentioned before, a too-little-explored topic in Western fiction. That said, I think that even people who do not ordinarily read Western fiction will get a thrill out of reading this novel. Krystal M. Anderson has set a new and very high standard to match in Western fiction writing, and anyone who enjoys reading novels should pick this one up and read it.
