The Sound Advice Encyclopedia of Voice-Over & the Business of Being A Working Talent is a non-fiction reference and instructional book written by Kate McClanaghan. The author is both an actor and voice-over talent, a producer, and the owner of The Sound Advice, a service that assists talent in the production of demos and offers coaching and promotional services. This book is designed for use by the novice as well as the experienced voice-over artist. McClanaghan breaks down the job of getting voice-over work into stages, and she sets out realistic, if a bit alarming, time frames within which a new talent should expect to get work. Every step in the process is discussed, from voice exercises designed to enhance your speaking ability, to analysis of commercials, to setting up your web site. Ninety percent of a voice-over talent's work is promotion the author advises, and she shows the reader exactly how to do that.

Kate McClanaghan's non-fiction reference book, The Sound Advice Encyclopedia of Voice-Over & the Business of Being A Working Talent, is a big book filled with everything you need to know about how to break into voice-over work. In the rare cases where McClanaghan does not have the answers or offers the services, she provides the reader with links to proven professionals in those areas. I was quite impressed by her coaching on how to micro-manage a voice-over career. She shows you what you can do, what you should never let your friends and relatives do, and where to get the professional setup you need to succeed. Sounds pretty hard when you read about the mass mailings, the constant promotion, and the 20-hour weekly commitment, but it also sounds very exciting and doable. Most of us have wondered if we have what it takes to be a voice-over artist; a careful reading of The Sound Advice Encyclopedia of Voice-Over & the Business of Being A Working Talent is, I think, an excellent first step on that journey. It's highly recommended.
