The Song of Embers is a work of fiction in the fantasy and adventure subgenres and forms the fifth novel in the Starfell book series. It is intended for middle-grade readers and was penned by author Jessica Renwick. In this continuing adventure series, we return to the exploits of Fable and her friends as she tries to restore her grandfather’s memories by magical means. A newly reborn phoenix holds the answer to the magic they need, but this means undertaking a journey filled with dangerous mountains, enemies hot on their trail, and perhaps even dragons.

Author Jessica Renwick knows how to craft a masterful fantasy tale that is accessible and enjoyable for MG readers, but can also entertain YA and adult readers alike with its sophisticated worldbuilding and heartfelt characters. I particularly enjoyed the development of Fable, whose challenges are appropriately demanding for a young hero, and the close narration of her psychological and emotional process of figuring stuff out will be a really interesting and empowering experience for young readers to go through by her side. Renwick’s imagination knows no bounds when it comes to characters and creatures alike, with writing of a cinematic quality that brings the tale to life with every sight, sound, and even smell on occasion. This immersive quality allows the story to flow at a speedy pace despite the complex plot. Overall, The Song of Embers is a highly recommended read for fans of the existing series, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend the series in general for fans of immersive and creative fantasy everywhere.
