Amy Louise Hill’s The Sky Queen is the story of a little girl and her family. They lived happily and spent a lot of time having fun together. Her father would take the family out on adventures and picnics. He even played games regularly with the little girl and her brother Jacob. Hide and seek was their favorite. But then her father fell ill and everything changed. He spent most of his time in the hospital or sleeping at home. The little girl soon learns her father has been diagnosed with cancer. Things get even worse when one day their father leaves home for the hospital and never returns. What happens to the little girl and her family?

There is no better way to teach kids about grief than by telling them a story, and Amy Louise Hill does a brilliant job in The Sky Queen, introducing the subject of death in the way that she does. I loved how Amy depicts the complex emotions associated with the grieving process in simple terms. Although the whole process of letting go and accepting reality is difficult, Amy shows that it is possible to overcome it. I also appreciated the way that she encourages kids to embrace their emotions and grieve for their loved ones because that is the only way they can truly heal from the pain of loss. Kids will learn a lot from this book and I highly recommend it to any child going through grief.
