K.C. Finn's long awaited fourth installment of the Shadeborn series is finally here. As its predecessor, Book 4 contains two novellas; The Shadow Of Light and The Seer And The Prince. How many more secrets we can discover about the House of Novel? Apparently after centuries of living, the secrets are endless. In The Shadow Of Light, we learn more about Lemarick’s uncle, Pascal Novel, and his dark past, his older sisters and his early encounters with Maxime Schoonjans. In the present day, his alliance with Lucy is bitter and untrustworthy as he looks fervently for Schoonjans’ glass eye. The Seer And The Prince reveals new tales from Jazzy and Lawrence and how the details of their past will shape their relationship further. We also learn how a djinn had meddled in Jazzy’s life when she was young.
Finn continues to delight readers with the series’ dark enchantment. Fans of Shadeborn don’t need to be told the level merit of Finn’s novels, as each installment never fails to give readers the dark and eccentric delights of the Theatre Imaginique family. Finn’s characters never cease to amaze me. All of them are engaging as ever and they are enough of a reason for the series to continue. The plot moves swiftly with many interesting moments, dark and witty dialogue, as well as great dynamics between the protagonists in the two novellas. Simply put, Book 4 serves its purpose well. I can’t wait to read the next one and I know the series will only get better.
