The Serpent King's Sorrow by Anne Rowan is about a little girl growing into an adult, and becoming Queen. The girl's name is Eleanor, and she becomes Queen in the beginning of the story when her father dies. She vows to her father that she will keep her word and make her kingdom the rich and prosperous kingdom that it once was, when they were allies with Balthazar, the King of Serpents and Seas. She decides to send her good friend Captain VanGaar out to sea to deliver her peace declaration. When he comes back, there is good news, but Balthazar does not accept the prized piece of jewelry as the peace declaration. Instead he wants a new wife, and that wife is destined to be Eleanor, Queen of the Seas.
I really loved reading The Serpent King's Sorrow, and loved the moral to the story. It was sad at points, but then it turned into happy moments too. Rowan made this story very emotional, and it really helped me imagine it and picture it. Rowan filled in a lot of detail when needed, which made the book thorough and comprehensible. This book is a great read for children to learn about greed and hope, and some young adults too who want to strengthen that skill. I hope young adults and children read this book and understand the concepts.
