The Scorpion of Chernobyl is a work of science fiction that sprang from real historical events and was penned by author Benjamin Feliciano with illustrations by Bianca Loran. Written for adults due to the graphic violence and generally unpleasant nature of the horrific results of nuclear fallout, this edgy sci-fi novel imagines the world of the streets of Pryp’yat’ after the Chernobyl disaster, in a world where the alleged ‘evacuated’ people have been left to rot in a society gone mad. As terror and horror rule the streets, Ande emerges. She’s been looking for just this kind of uprising to fight against as she too fights for survival on those dangerous streets.

Author Benjamin Feliciano has imagined a fantastically conceptual world for his dystopian disaster flavored by real history. The streets of Pryp’yat’ come to life in all their gory horror, and fans of such cautionary tales and Mad Max-esque survival stories are certain to adore Feliciano’s talent for description and atmosphere. Ande is a powerful anti-hero figure, hopping between the law and the mafia with style and ease, wading through a dangerous world to uncover its most interesting secrets for us. The plot twists and turns with some excellent cause and effect, and is quite sensational but also viscerally real, taking the time to show readers the full impact of the disaster and the plot’s Russian cover-up. What results is a recommended read for sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction fans looking for something truly immersive, but also highly original to the genre.
