All Georgie wants for Christmas is a new pair of skates. His old ones are too small and he loves skating on the pond when it freezes over. But times are tough and there’s not much money to buy gifts. Papa even said that Santa was finding things tough and might not visit all the children this Christmas. That made Georgie really sad. What was Christmas without Santa? As the family decorates the tree, Georgie sulks, but his mom sets him straight by reminding him that Christmas is not just about receiving gifts. That sets Georgie thinking and he comes up with his own ideas to make Christmas extra special, and to make sure that Santa does come to their house this Christmas.
Alane Adams's colorful picture book story, The Santa Thief, is more than just another Christmas story. This one has historical relevance, as it takes place in 1929, the beginning of the Depression years. But times have been tough on and off since those terrible years, and the message in this story is important to remind young readers that sometimes the simplest joys of Christmas are in the times spent with family. It’s not about the newest and the best tech toy available, or the shiniest, splashiest new outfits, or the best new skates. Christmas is about love and family, and the joy of being with those you care about. A powerful message, told from a historical perspective, with marvellous illustrations by Lauren Gallegos. This book is truly a Christmas treasure.
