A 200-year-old vampire lives in an abandoned 5-storey concrete building in Union Cross Park. He keeps himself fed by picking victims from a drug rehab nearby and through his supply of blood slaves. One night, a woman named Alexandria visits the park and the vampire finds himself intrigued with her. He subdues her and brings her back to his home, confused and angered by his conscience that’s no longer dormant. He then finds out that Alexandria is not like his other victims, and he painfully discovers that he needs to earn her trust quickly as his existence depends on it.
In The Sanctuary (Union Cross Park Series, Book 1) by Felicia F. Leibenguth, it is a battle of wills between a troubled old soul and a vampire. The classic vampire theme is given an intriguing premise and told through an engaging narrative. Reading the story from the perspective of a character that I didn’t root for was uncomfortable. That said, his past is interesting, particularly about the vampires that were responsible for his turning and his bond with his late mother. Alexandria, on the other hand, is easy to empathize with, and the contrast of her being fearful and then brave the next minute amazed me. I’m ambivalent about the ending as there are still questions left unanswered, particularly about Alexandria’s past and a man named Quillon. Nevertheless, there’s the promise of a sequel and no doubt more will be revealed to readers. Overall, a solid urban horror from Leibenguth.
