Imperium is a work of fiction in the science fiction and adventure subgenres, and it forms the second novel in The Saga of the Phoenix book series. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Oriano Galvanini. Following on from the events of the first novel, in which readers experienced the birth of a whole new civilization on Earth that promotes global harmony under one government, this second novel sees that organization take on the world of space travel. A message calling for aid from an incorporeal species sets events in motion that could mean destruction and war for our now harmonious society, but victory would mean a greater peace than the universe has ever known.
Author Oriano Galvanini delivers, in The Saga of the Phoenix: Imperium, a hard-core science fiction and high-concept adventure novel for those who want something serious to get their teeth into. Whilst the level of detail and intricacy of the philosophy won’t be for everyone, the right audience will revel in such a deep commitment to worldbuilding and the overall socio-political and moral messages that underpin the work. I was amazed by the wealth of concepts that are woven into the work, from alien communication to the nature of time, peace, and harmony, and even artificial intelligence and the all-too-familiar destructive philosophy of the Empire. This plot-driven tale offers much for those seeking a vision of a harmonious new world, and an intelligent and balanced consideration of what sacrifices and triumphs humanity would have to make to get it. Overall, I would recommend Imperium for fans of the first book in the series, and I am fascinated to see what more The Saga of the Phoenix series may have for us in the future.
