In The Right Words by Meg Rosenthal, college student Ember Owens is assigned a partner project in her advanced creative writing contest. Group projects are not her jam. To make matters worse, social phenomenon Matt Callahan is her designated writing partner. Their writing topic is to create a story in which the main character falls in love. Not only is the result of this project linked to a major class grade but it will also be entered into a prestigious magazine story contest. Few people know that Ember’s father is a well-known author, and she plans to lessen any academic pressure by keeping this information to herself. As the assignment progresses, Ember begins to understand that her aversion to the writing topic might echo the reality unfolding in her own life. All she wants is an end to this impossible assignment without compromising her well-voiced beliefs. On realizing that the writing assignment mirrors her feelings, Ember needs to resolve her unwelcome emotions before she ends up in another failed college romance.
Meg Rosenthal skillfully pens a beautiful story of self-realization in this coming-of-age tale about new-adult romance. Rich dialogue and vivid descriptions keep the reader engaged in this fun and highly relatable tale. Suitable reading for romance fans of all ages, The Right Words is a fun diversion when a light-hearted rom-com is needed. Strong evidence of the author’s willingness to support the plot line with fact-checked research adds credence to this otherwise standard sample of women’s fiction. I loved this story. A worthwhile read with a feel-good effect.
