When Lily Ryan gets the diagnosis that her cancer has spread throughout her body, her daughter Jessica is hit with the reality that her mother is living on borrowed time. At sixteen years old, Jessica can’t imagine life without her mother, and all the fun and memorable things that they do together. She begins to think about things that she never gave much thought to before, the first being who her father was. Lily had raised her daughter alone and without family, which was another question that Jessica had - where was her mom's family? In an attempt to get some answers and visualize a future without her mom, she begins telling Lily stories of major events in her life to come. From graduating high school to getting married, Jessica weaves beautiful tales that give her mother comfort. Meanwhile, Lily slowly opens up to her daughter, revealing her isolated past with religiously cult-like parents, and the incident that resulted in Jessica’s birth. With less than three months to live, Lily knows that whether she’s ready to hear it or not, her daughter needs to know her whole story before she dies.
The Rest Of My Life is such a great novel. I loved the plot and the characters. It was very realistic about cancer and confronting those feelings you have knowing that someone you love is dying. I was hooked, wanting to know more about Lily and the life she left behind before having her daughter. It’s a story that a lot of people can relate to because cancer doesn’t discriminate and so many people are affected by it. I think Rachel Inbar has done a brilliant job with The Rest Of My Life. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry as well as feel so many emotions from start to finish. I definitely recommend reading this book.
