The Queen of Bones by G. Zimmerman tells the story of Sara Hill - a protagonist unlike any others you might have met on your previous literary journeys. She is only 17 years old, an orphan, and needs to survive in a post apocalyptic world on her own after she loses her only friends. They heard rumors of gangs in Seattle. It was said that they were trying to recreate human society there, so Sara continues to try to find her way there. She has one advantage: she knows a way to survive the deadly sun throbs that burn everyone to death with intense heat. Considering that she suffers from arthritis and is a single, weak, young female in a hostile world, Sara needs any advantage she can get. The question is whether there really is a colony in Seattle or whether Sara will find that she is one of the last human beings - thanks to her unique way of surviving.
The plot of The Queen of Bones by G. Zimmerman is very interesting and stands out because of the unusual main character. While I did not always connect to the main character on an emotional level, I found her to be refreshingly different from the usual standard fare that you get in young adult novels. I also enjoyed the plot, as it was well written. A few elements were predictable, but there is still a lot that takes you by surprise, so you can never be sure whether you really figured out a character's true motivations. People who like young adult novels in a post-apocalyptic setting will very likely enjoy the story and finish the book in just a few sittings (because it's hard to put down). It will also be an encouraging read for people who share some of the protagonist's issues - she shows that problems do not need to slow you down, and might sometimes even be an advantage that makes you stronger than others around you.
