In the Looking Glass is the second volume of The Princess and the Plumber series by M. David Lutz. Never known for her beauty, Princess Tundra of the Kingdom of Parking Lot barely survived a poorly concocted beauty potion after being given the antidote, Halle-berry, by her champion, Olaf the Oaf. Now known as the fairest maiden in the land, Tundra reluctantly agrees to her father's wishes to marry Prince Charmer from the Kingdom of Bargains, although her heart beats for Olaf. But when an envious vixen named Sheila, a former cheerleader, hears about Tundra's famed beauty, she vows to eliminate her and embarks on her plans, including hiring an assassin. Meanwhile, Tundra leaves her emotionally abusive new husband to make her way back to Parking Lot. Will Tundra and Olaf find their happily ever after?
If you love satirical fantasy books such as Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld, The Princess and the Plumber is just the book for you. Hysterically funny with dialogue loaded with sardonic wit and humor, M. David Lutz's narrative parodies the traditional fairy tale romance novels brilliantly, even referring to a few famous characters from those books. I loved every moment of the reading experience. The characters are quirky and full of idiosyncracies that give color to their personalities. Apart from Tundra and Olaf's romance, I also enjoyed the friendship between Tundra and Jayne, and King Public and Shecky's banter really had me in stitches at times. The book ends on a cliffhanger, which means there will be a third installment to the series. Anyone who enjoys well-done satire and fantasy should give this one a chance!
